The Victoria Jubilee Dispensary Society, Ahmedabad, was established in 1865 by Rao Bahadur Ranchhodlal Chhotalal, (pioneer of the textile industry in Gujarat). The dispensary was the very first Obstetrics and Gynec.

The family of Rao Bahadur Ranchhodlal Chhotalal was later known as Sir Chinubhai Madhowlal, Baronet Family. The hereditary title of Baronet was first bestowed upon Sir Chinubhai for his philanthropic deeds in the field of education, health and social welfare. The family contributed sizeable funds for the development and progress of the dispensary. This resulted in thousands of women patients being able to avail of the services of the dispensary during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Ten years ago, the trustees took a decision to convert this hospital into a General Hospital with enormous effort and financial assistance from like-minded individuals. Apart from the maternity and Gynec departments, various departments were added later on which are as below:

Pediatrics,
Ophthalmology
General Surgery
Medicine
Dental and ENT
Physiotherapy Centre
Pathological laboratory (air-conditioned and equipped with sophisticated computerized equipment)
Medical Store
24hours ambulance van

Executive Summary

India, categorized as developing country is marching towards progress in leaps and bounds. However, the seeds of progress were already sown before independence.

Amongst the most challenging is health related issues. The most crucial among all the health issues is infant mortality and maternal mortality. The country contributes 2.4 million of the global burden of 10.8 million under-five child deaths, which is the highest for any nation in the world. Nearly 26 million infants are born each year, of whom 1.2 million die before completion of the first 4 weeks of life and 1.7 million die before reaching the first birthday. Maternal death is defined as death of women while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy from any cause related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management. The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in one year. WHO estimates show that out of the 529,000 maternal deaths globally each Year 136,000 (25.7%) are contributed by India. This is the highest burden for any single country in the world. (Data as per 1998-99).

Considering these above-mentioned serious issues one such trust started providing gynec and obstetric services along with educating midviwes way back in 1865. The Victoria Jubilee Dispensary Trust was the very first trust, which catered to the issues of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The basic goal of this trust is to provide proper and adequate services to the needy and poor section of the society. Later on this trust expanded its wings to the other departments of medicine like ophthalmology, oncology, orthopedics, radiology etc.
